Grief Counseling

Local Groups and Resources

Family, friends and society don’t always understand how drastically the loss of a pet can affect us, and therefore they can find it difficult to support the grief we often feel. The San Diego Humane Society’s Pet Loss Support Group provides an environment where thoughts and emotions can be shared with those of similar circumstances and feelings of grief are understood and validated. Our Grief Counseling group is facilitated by a licensed, clinical social worker.

Reservations are encouraged but not required. Evening and weekend sessions are available to best accommodate your needs. Click here or call 760-510-1010 for more information or to make a reservation. Please bring a picture of your beloved pet to the session.

The Grief Counseling group is open to everyone ages 10 and up and is appropriate for those who have recently lost a pet, are still mourning an old loss, are anticipating the death of a pet or are preparing for euthanasia.

If you are:

  • Feeling lost without your pet
  • Wondering what to tell your child about the loss of a pet
  • Finding that family and friends fail to understand or attempt to minimize your loss
  • Wondering if it is too soon to get another pet
  • Still grieving for a pet you had some time ago
  • Considering euthanasia

…then the San Diego Humane Society’s Pet Loss Support Group may help. Losing your companion animal can be an extremely difficult and painful experience, and we offer a caring, compassionate understanding of your loss.

Child Grief Counseling

The death of a beloved family pet can cause elicit a wide array of emotions from both adults and children. The typical stages of grief are denial, sadness, depression, guilt, anger, and recovery (or relief). These emotions can be quite pronounced especially if the passing of a pet is sudden and unexpected. For children, the effects of grief can vary widely depending on the child’s age and maturity level. Much of the child’s reaction to death depends on their ability to understand the finality of life.

2-3 Year Olds:

Almost all children in this age group have no understanding of death. They tend to consider death a form of sleep. At this age, parents should tell children that their pet has died and will not come back. However, parents should stress to children at this age that the death of the pet is not due to anything the child may have said or done. Most children in this age group can easily accept a new pet in place of the deceased one.

4-6 Year Olds:

Most children in this age range have some understanding of death, but they believe that the pet lives on somewhere else. A child in this age group tends to believe that the pet has gone to heaven or is living somewhere in the sky with other animals that have already died. Some children might even believe that the pet is just continuing to sleep somewhere else.

Some children in this age group may begin to think that their own death is imminent and that the death of those around them is likely to occur. Parents should reassure children in this age group that death is not likely to occur and that the passing of the family pet is just natural. Children in this age group sometimes experience disruptions in sleeping or eating habits and may even experience bladder/bowel problems. Parents should maintain open lines of communication with children in this age group in order to allow them to express their feelings.

7-9 Year Olds:

Children in this age group often begin to realize the finality of death. Although they tend to believe that death cannot happen to them, some do think that the death of their parents or other loved ones is a reality. Parents should be honest with children in this age group if questions arise about death.

Some children in this age group can experience problems in school, aggression, or other antisocial behavior. Additionally, other children may tend to become overly needy or even withdrawal from normal activities. Sometimes these reactions will not occur immediately; but rather, over the course of several weeks or months.

10-12 Year Olds:

Most children in this group begin to understand death as something that is part of the circle of life and is something that cannot be reversed. Parents should continue to keep open lines of communication with children in this age group in case they feel the need to discuss their feelings.

Teens and Adolescents:

This age group of children tends to react in a way very similar to adults. However, some adolescents can express grief through forms of denial. Many children in this age group tend to internalize their feelings and thus do not tend to have outward displays of emotions. Again, parents should recognize the possibility that children who display little to no emotions over the passing of a cherished family pet could actually be experiencing intense feelings of grief. Parents should keep communications lines open and be prepared to discuss those feelings with their children.

Important!

Although the passing of a cherished family pet is a natural part of the life cycle, it is an event which can cause emotional and behavioral problems in children. The information in this article certainly not meant to be all inclusive, but is simply a general guideline to assist parents with grief management in their children. If you, or your children, feel you need professional assistance during this difficult time, then please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be happy to recommend a professional to assist you.

I forgot to write a review at the time but my sweet little fur baby passed away suddenly and so we called them. They came out really quick and we're very respectful in the handling of our dog. When we went to the place to see him put in the cremation thing they allowed us a few minutes to say our final goodbyes. We paid extra to have him be the only one and we received the ashes the same day since our appointment was early in the day. We got an urn with his photo and a snippit of his hair and clay impression of his paw. While I hate thinking of my pets dying, I will definitely be using them in the future. They were very kind knowing how hard a pet death is and very respectful of the body. This is a service no one wants to need but when needed I highly recommend them.

The passing of my beloved cat, Kity Kity, was very sad and traumatic for me and my wife. We had her for 17 years. Angle Paws treated us like family. The receptions made it a very comfortable situation and took Care of our Kity Kity, and us. He understood our grief and our moaning. They know that the loss of a pet, was like lossing a member of our family. We are happy that Angle Paws took care of Kity Kity, and now she's home. Thank you Angle Paws.Tom and Araceli

Absolutely horrible do not use these people . I paid over $300 for my dog to get Cremated two months ago. Still nothing. No communication from them. I have to consistently ask where my dog is as they forget to text you, they forget the message you, they forget everything even your dog that you paid them for a Service.

I would encourage anyone to avoid using Angel Paws. My beloved cat died the end of December, 2023. It took Angel Paws over three weeks to return ashes and they had mishandled her ashes and the ashes they returned were of another animal. It took a week for them to find my cat's ashes and return them. Hopefully they were her ashes. They made a very sad time for us very distressing. An owner, Chris, did not consistently return calls and he did not follow-through with everything he said. A terrible experience and they were unprofessional. Please check out other reviews. Apparently this isn't their first time of horrible service.

Our dog was taken by a coyote. It was such a tragic experience for the entire family. Fortunately, my daughter found "Angel Paws" on the web. They were absolutely amazing. They wasted no time picking him up, caring for him and returning him as promised. They were empathic to our needs and feelings. I would strongly recommend them to anyone

Angel paws did a beautiful job with my dogs cremation. I had them pick up our dog when she passed and was greeted by a very kind, understanding, and helpful individual. I chose the gold package (certification, hair trimmings, paw print, and cremains place in a beautiful cedar box with lock and key) and was not disappointed. Thank you so much Angel Paws!

Our buddy Poker passed of old age on June 24th of 2018. We had no idea what to do with the remains all we knew was that we wanted to keep him with us always and burial was not an option since we dont own a home. I called several places and Angel Paws was the only business that called me back. They offered various packages that included some very beautiful mementos all at very affordable prices. My mother wanted an urn instead of a little box and were extremely helpful in finding just what she wanted for our buddy of 13 years. They tailored their service to our needs and we are very appreciative for it. We had to wait a good bit and believe me that was hardly an issue when we finally got Pokers cremains back home. We couldn't have been any happier with the service. Thank You!

If you are looking for genuine compassion during this difficult time, this is the place to go. I highly recommend using angel paws if you are looking for pet euthanasia and cremation. These gentleman helped us with both. From the first time we first called until we came to pick up our beloved Spikes remains, these gentlemen made the process very easy for us. They helped us find a veterinarian that came out to our home to euthanize our beloved Spike. We were not only shown a high level of compassion throughout the process, what we received back from them was just amazing. The urn, paw print and fur clipping we received back are so beautifully done and will be something we will always cherish. It has been a difficult time saying goodbye but we are extremely grateful for the help we received at this company.

Our dachshund was taken by a hive of African bees. Traumatic on the kids, and us. We decided to cremate and plan to place some ashes and plant into a tree urn so his life continues. The guys at Angel Paws were very kind and helpful. The service was fast and he came back to us within a week. The wooden urn supplied in our package was very nicely personalized. I recommend this company to help in these sad situations

I have had a terrible experience with this place so far. After being told I can come back in and pick up the remains of my dog, I have stopped by twice during advertised business hours (online and on the door); both during the week... once around 11 AM and once around 3 PM. With both instances there was nobody on site and nobody answered the phone. This place needs to get their act together if they are going to be in a sensitive industry. Still trying to collect remains. Would never recommend after such an unprofessional experience.

Angel Paws Pet Cremation is a fantastic pet crematory. I lost a cat of 16 years that I really loved, but what they provide gave me closure she's at peace. They gave me a bit of her hair, along with a paw print, two poems, a certificate of cremation, and a beautiful box with her name on it. Coming from San Diego, this was absolutely worth the drive.
